“An inspiring automotive art form unto itself”

Packard was a dominant force among hundreds of automotive companies which changed the face of America, along with its fascinating way of life and its economy. The Packard automobile quickly earned a reputation for its solid construction, superb reliability, and most of all ease of operation. At its peak during that Golden Age, Packard was at the very pinnacle of its success, an enviable success which had developed and matured from its very inception. Packard quickly became THE CAR of celebrities, synonymous with movie stars, statesmen, presidents, and royalty everywhere.

Packard easily became a world symbol of prestige and dignity in its half century of being. Packard’s demise after 50-plus great years was painfully slow after its meteoric rise to fame and fortune. Packard’s penchant for quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail, clashed with the inevitable mass production and accompanying competitive low prices making inroads into the car market place. Despite an exciting new range of cars launched in 1956, sales continued to waiver, and Packard was unfortunately forced to close in 1958.

The Thunderbird, introduced in 1955, was effectively Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Corvette, although it was also a response to the British invasion led by the Jaguar XK 120. The car had style, refinement, V8 power and initially was available only as a convertible; a distinctive removable hardtop with a circular porthole window later became available as an option. A minor face lift to the car in 1957 created what, for enthusiasts, will always be the Classic Thunderbird.
